A pilot program that permit some political marketing campaign emails bypass spam filters in Gmail is shutting down on the finish of this month. Google confirmed the Jan. 31 finish date in a authorized submitting Monday. The tech large is asking a federal choose to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Republican Nationwide Committee that accuses it of disproportionately sending conservative political emails to spam.
Google launched the pilot program final 12 months after conservatives leveled expenses of political bias towards the corporate, claiming that Republican fundraising emails had been extra prone to be despatched to spam than fundraising emails from Democrats had been.
The RNC reportedly stated the pilot program did not go far sufficient. In October, it filed a lawsuit accusing Google of censoring Republican fundraising emails.
Google has denied any political bias in the way it types electronic mail.
“The RNC is flawed,” reads the movement filed Monday. “Gmail’s spam filtering insurance policies apply equally to emails from all senders, whether or not they’re politically affiliated or not.”
When reached for remark, Google spokesperson José Castañeda reiterated that the corporate does not “filter emails for political functions” and stated the “swimsuit is with out benefit.”
